IoT and Wearables have become very popular and are becoming in-dispensable part of day to day life. According to Gartner, around 275 million wearable devices are expected to be shipped this year and expected to grow to 323 million next year. They are available in different usable forms like Smart watch, head-mounted display, smart garment, chest strap, Wristband etc. Wearables are finding applications across industries like health care, fitness, mobile payments, safety, access etc. Given the competition in this field, for a vendor to introduce a product to the market, it is essential to do it fast and capture the market early.
For a new wearable design, rather than starting from scratch, if there is a reference platform to base it up on, the development can be highly accelerated. Embien offers a set of wearable design collections called the eStorm-WC that can be used for this purpose. These Embedded IoT solutions are available in different form factors and for variety of applications. Customers can choose the set of features they want and get the basic reference design from Embien to quicken their development.
Embien's core team has been working with battery powered embedded system for more than a decade and specifically on wearable device development for the last few years. Serving multiple clients, we have accumulated immense knowledge in this field of IoT and Wearables development. We have done several designs that comprise different set of sensors and interfaces. All these modules are available as pre-engineered design elements that can be put together quickly by customers and realize designs very fast.
Developing the hardware is just one part of the development story. It is essential to gather data from the wearable and more importantly to infer insights from the data. This data has to be put in use to create a differentiate user experience. This calls for array of software activities - firmware, mobile apps and cloud applications. Firmware runs in the wearable device and manages over all functionality of the device, collects valuable data, run algorithms on it, generate insights and take decisions based on that. In some cases, these insights have to be communicated to mobile phones to present it to the user. An extension could be to share it to a cloud application for larger user base tracking.
Embien's eStorm-WC is not a standalone hardware solution, but comes with all the essential software needed for deployment of your wearable device. It is possible to create products within few weeks of kick starting the developments. In many cases they can be used directly for Internet of Things proof of concept development.
eStorm WC is a collection of hardware design elements and libraries that can be quickly leveraged to create wearable devices and battery powered systems. As with any processing system, wearable comprises of 4 major components.
The microcontrollers are the center of the wearable device ecosystem. They are responsible for overall management of the device as well as running intelligent algorithms. Embien has designs based on the following MCUs
It is essential for the devices to communicate with others devices to convey various information like number of steps taken, level of industrial sensors, geo-fencing alerts etc. Of multiple communication options, BLE is the most popular because of its low power consumption and cost. If range is an important criteria, other options available include WiFi, LoRa, ZigBee etc. Embien has multiple design elements based up on BLE SoC, LoRa modules etc.
Sensors in the wearable are the source of physical data that has to be processed. Major sensors used in a wearable are accelerometers, gyroscopes, GPS, temperature sensors, SpO2, heart rate sensors. Also to interact with users LCDs, LEDs, capacitive touch screens etc are being used. Our eStorm-WC designs have all these units available along with necessary firmware libraries.
With small size and frequent usage, power is the most challenging resource in the wearable. Embien's eStorm WC platforms have been powered by different batteries like Coin cells, Li-ion battery, Ni-Cd battery etc. Few of these designs are powered by non-rechargeable battery for months together. Some of them are rechargeable batteries that can go up to a week without recharging.
Apart of the eStorm WC designs, Embien also offers complete wearable device design services including complete hardware development, firmware and application development. Our rich partnership ecosystem enables us develop attractive enclosures and support manufacturing devices in number. Get in touch with us to explore more about our Embedded IoT solutions.
