The display in an industrial automation system, more commonly called as 'Human Machine Interface' (HMI) is a very critical aspect of the system. As the name implies, it is the operator interface with which the humans interact with the system. It needs to be very intuitive even for a less skilled plant worker to understand and operate for easy monitoring and control leading to effective resource management.

With advent of mass computing especially low cost displays and interface technologies, industrial displays with touch have become the trend. The latest devices for the operator interfaces are having ruggedized single/multi touch options. Web Based Mobile Operator Interface Design

Currently with wide spread use of cloud technologies, it is possible to remotely monitor and control industrial devices. The performance of an industrial device could be continuously uploaded to a central web server from where the data can be visualized using Web interfaces or by using mobile applications. Such systems not only leverages existing infrastructure, but also enables control/debugging without any field visits. Powerful smart phones enable viewing these data using multiple intuitive widgets.
